World Book Day

Costa Rica will celebrate World Book Day with concerts, fairs, workshops and more.

Every April 23, the world commemorates World Book and Copyright Day, a date proclaimed by UNESCO in 1995 to promote the enjoyment of reading among people of all ages and cultures. This day seeks to highlight the transformative power of books, capable of uniting generations and building bridges between communities.

The choice of April 23rd is no coincidence: it coincides with the symbolic date on which three great figures of universal literature died—William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega—which reinforces the historical and cultural value of this celebration.

Book Week at the National Museum of Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, various cultural activities will be added to the global celebration. In 2025, the National Museum of Costa Rica will join in the festivities with a Book Week, which will take place from April 22 to 25 in its gardens.

During these days, the public will be able to enjoy:

  • Reading corner
  • Writing workshops for over 15s
  • Storytellers
  • Recreational activities
  • Book release

The proposal seeks to offer spaces for creativity, imagination and encounters between readers, writers and the curious of all ages.

Moravian Book Festival

Another outstanding initiative is that of the team at the Agapito Rosales Méndez Moravian Public Library, which cordially invites the community to participate in the Book Festival, a special celebration that will take place from April 25 to 27, 2025, starting at 4:00 p.m.. , at Lincoln Plaza. This event promises to be a meeting point for those who enjoy literature in an accessible environment full of cultural activities.

The country’s book fairs

Apart from these events, Costa Rica’s literary calendar will include other important celebrations throughout the year:

  • Costa Rica International Book Fair
It will take place from July 19 to 27 at the Costa Rica Convention Center, with the participation of publishers, national and international authors, and activities such as talks, book presentations and autograph signings.
  • National Reading Festival
It will take place from May 30 to June 1 in the Antigua Aduana, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Youth. This festival is characterized by its inclusive and family atmosphere, with multiple spaces dedicated to fostering a love of reading.

At all these events, authors, readers and booksellers come together to share their passion for books, sign copies, give talks and promote new publications, thus strengthening the national literary scene.
