The Poás Volcano National Park has officially reopened its doors to visitors, as announced by the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC). Following the recent volcanic activity, the reopening takes place with updated security measures to protect tourists and park staff. The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), through the Central Conservation Area (ACC-SINAC), confirmed that the park is once again accessible under specific operational guidelines. These include a reduction in the number of visitors, the closure of the Botos Trail and the mandatory use of helmets to visit the crater viewpoint.

Security Measures and Recent Evaluations

The National Park had been temporarily closed due to increased volcanic activity, including phreatic eruptions. Following safety protocols, the authorities restricted access while assessing the situation. They also assured that all measures taken prioritize the safety of visitors and park staff.

Experts from the National Park, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) and the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) took measurements to assess the current state of the volcano. Their findings indicate that activity levels have returned to acceptable limits, allowing the park to reopen.

Visitors’ recommendations

Despite the reopening, MINAE urges visitors to follow all established safety protocols and to avoid entry through unauthorized access points. The National Park has clear signage about high-risk areas, and tourists should exercise caution at all times.

Always follow the instructions of the park rangers and stay on the designated trails.

Tickets to the park must be purchased online through the official SINAC website: www.sinac.go.cr.

Those interested should contact park officials via email at [email protected]. Authorities recommend staying informed through official channels for any new updates on volcanic activity and park operations.
