Miradas Cycle to commemorate the International Women’s Day.

To commemorate International Women’s Day, Preámbulo presents the Ciclo Miradas: 8M, a week of films that pays tribute to women in the seventh art. During this special week, various films directed by female filmmakers will be screened, providing a platform for their voices and narratives.

Films will be shown in the Gómez Miralles room of the Centro de Cine, located at com/ciclo-de-cine-el-septimo-arte-gratuito-en-el-corazon-de-san-jose/”>Cinema Center, located at 11th street, 9th avenue, Barrio Amón, San José, behind the Costa Rican Insurance Institute. Admission is free.

Memoirs of a burning body (Costa Rica/Spain, 2024)

  • Synopsis: Through a mixture of fiction and documentary, the film follows the story of Ana, Patricia and Mayela, three women who grew up in a repressive society where sexuality was a taboo. Their stories are interwoven in the voice of a 65-year-old woman, who revisits her life full of memories, secrets and hidden desires.

The Day Iceland Stood Still (Iceland/USA., 2024)

  • Directed by: Pamela Hogan
  • Duration: 70 minutes
  • Rating: Recommended for children aged 12 and over
  • Synopsis: Documentary that relives the legendary strike of Icelandic women in 1975. For a whole day, thousands of women refused to work, look after their children or cook, marking a milestone in the struggle for gender equality.

These films mainly address gender issues, focusing on women and their position within a social structure that limits them to the domestic sphere. But this reality has a historical and structural origin: patriarchy. And the works explore a geographical component, highlighting the contrast between women’s lives in rural and urban areas, as well as the process of migration between these two environments.

Two Times a Woman (Costa Rica, 1982)

  • Synopsis: Digital premiere of the documentary restored by the Film Center’s Image Archive. The film portrays the organization of Costa Rican women in rural and urban areas to confront labor marginality and learn about their rights.

A Life Like Any Other (France/Belgium, 2022)

  • Duration: 68 minutes
  • Rating: +15
  • Synopsis: A documentary that explores a woman’s loss of freedom after becoming a mother. Her father had recorded her happy moments on home movies, but the director discovers a different story and reconstructs another version of events.

This film series is an opportunity to reflect on the realities and struggles of women through the art of cinema. Invitation is open to the general public to be part of this celebration of cinema and women.
