The Costa Rica International Film Festival is proud to present an outstanding selection of documentaries in its “Focus 1” section. These films will take the audience on a deep and emotional journey through personal and cultural stories from different parts of the world.

1. El Lento Camino a Casa

Driven by the desire to make peace with a place she once called home, Hõbe embarks on a long and familiar journey back to her childhood house in Penikoorma. Upon her arrival, memories blend with the present, and the question “Can a home be lost?” finds its answer.

2. Marungka Tjalatjunu (Dipped in Black)

We follow the road trip of Yankunytjatjara man, Derik Lynch, back to his homeland (Country), Aputula, as memories of his childhood return. A journey from the oppression of white life in the city of Adelaide, back to his remote Anangu community to seek spiritual healing and perform on the sacred ground of the Inma. Inma is a traditional form of storytelling that uses the visual, verbal and physical, and has been a form of Anangu Tjukurpa (myth) cultural transmission for over 60,000 years.

3. Desierto

Year: 2023
Genre: Documentary.

A photographer plays with different images of his territory and wonders about the landscape where he grew up and the relationships between people, institutions and animals of the Patagonian steppe.

4. Lagos, Lagos

Director: Nnenna Onuoha
Country: Portugal, Nigeria
Year: 2018
Genre: Documentary

On both sides of the Atlantic, two coastal cities share the same name: Lagos. Over 600 years, the voices of travelers who have passed between them bear witness to the uneven history of movement between Nigeria and Portugal, Africa and Europe.
