El Santuario Waterfall: A Natural Treasure in Upala

El Santuario waterfall, a natural treasure in Upala.
Located in Dos Ríos de Upala, near the Rincón de la Vieja volcano, the El Santuario waterfall, also known as La Catedral, is a stunning destination that combines adventure, volcanic geology and an almost mystical landscape. Its formation inside a natural cave and its jungle surroundings have earned it comparisons with a “Jurassic world”, making it one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Costa Rica.
Main features
The Sanctuary stands out for its location in a canyon surrounded by high volcanic rock walls, which dramatically filter the light. On sunny days, the sun’s rays pass through the narrow canyon and create impressive visual effects, enhancing the beauty of the place.
The name “La Catedral” (The Cathedral) comes from the impressive rock formation inside the cave, where tall natural columns evoke the pedestals of a church, giving it a unique majesty. Thanks to the proximity of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, the walls, composed of volcanic sedimentation, present an amazing contrast of colors, from ochre tones to deep greys. This geological phenomenon, combined with the filtration of light in the canyon, enhances its beauty and creates an almost mystical atmosphere, worthy of its name.

Access and Tour
Visits to this waterfall require prior reservation and a guide is compulsory, as the trail crosses private land. The route to the waterfall covers 2.5 km (round trip) along well-maintained paths. Along the way, visitors can enjoy viewpoints that offer panoramic views of the canyon and the surrounding volcanic landscape.
How to get there
From Liberia, the most accessible route takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, following highway 917 in the direction of Quebrada Azul. Although the gravel road is in good condition, it is recommended to use a vehicle with some ground clearance to avoid setbacks. From San José, the trip takes approximately 4 hours.

El Santuario is not only an ideal destination for nature lovers, but also a place where the majesty of the surroundings conveys a sense of peace and connection with the earth. Its combination of adventure, natural beauty and mysticism makes it an unforgettable place for those seeking an authentic Costa Rican experience.
