Chato Volcano: A Natural Treasure in Costa Rica

Chato Volcano
When talking about the volcanoes of Costa Rica, the Arenal Volcano is usually the first that comes to mind. Through its majesty and activity, it has become one of the most iconic destinations in the country. However, few know its “younger brother”, the Volcán Chato or Cerro Chato. Many images of the Arenal include Chato in the background, but its discreet appearance, more like a hill, means that it goes unnoticed.
History and Attributes of the Chato Volcano
According to geological records, the Chato Volcano had its first eruption approximately 38,000 years ago and its last recorded activity was around 3,500 years ago. This last eruption was significant, as it gave rise to one of the region’s best-known natural wonders: the La Fortuna waterfall. This impressive waterfall has become a must-see attraction for those visiting the area.
The Chato Volcano rises 1,140 meters (3,740 feet) above sea level. At its summit is a lagoon approximately 500 meters wide, with beautiful turquoise waters due to its volcanic origin. It is called Chato (Spanish for “small”) because of the appearance of its cone, the truncated summit having been destroyed by various explosions. From a distance, the summit of the volcano is shaped like a sleeping woman.
Hiking on the Chato Volcano
Exploring the Chato Volcano along its trails is a challenging but rewarding experience. It is not a hike for everyone, as the trails are steep and lack railings or support ropes. However, for adventure lovers, this route is perfect. There are two main access points: from the Arenal Observatory Lodge or from GreenLagoon Lodge. The walk takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the pace of the hiker.
The trailhead is on the grounds of the Arenal Waterfall Lodge, where you need to stop at the kiosk and pay for a pass. When you pay, you receive a wristband and there is a map of the trail available. The cost of access is $15, including access to showers and a swimming pool. Although it is supposedly prohibited, access is still allowed.
The path is surrounded by lush vegetation, with imposing trees and rich biodiversity. During the ascent, you can observe various species of flora and fauna typical of Costa Rica. When you reach the top, your efforts are rewarded with the view of the crater lake, a magical and peaceful place.

Considering the difficulty of the walk, it is not recommended for young children or people with health problems. In these cases, it is better to enjoy the volcano from viewpoints in the area.
Other Activities in the Region
Hiking is not the only option for enjoying the area. For those seeking adventure, the canopy tour in Arenal is a thrilling experience. Gliding along a zip line over the rainforest offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the two volcanoes.
Another popular activity is horse riding. Riding along the trails in the area allows you to enjoy the scenery without the effort of a strenuous hike. It is also an excellent opportunity to observe the region’s varied flora and fauna.
Why visit the Chato Volcano?
The Chato Volcano is not only an impressive natural wonder, but also a convenient destination for travelers. It is only 2-3 hours from Juan Santamaría International Airport, which makes it easier to get to than other destinations that require journeys of up to 5 or 7 hours.
On top of that, its proximity to the Arenal Volcano means that visitors can enjoy two volcanoes in a single trip, an experience that few can boast of. Whether it’s for its challenging trail, its geological history or the many activities in the area, the Chato Volcano is a destination for those seeking adventure, nature and beauty in Costa Rica.
