The 2022 Central American Games
Costa Rica and Guatemala to host Central American Games 2022
From October 27 to November 13, 2022, Costa Rica and Guatemala will be the center of attention of Central American sports. Indeed, they will be the joint venues of the XII edition of the Central American Sports Games.
Context of the Central American Games 2022
After its last edition in Nicaragua, in 2017, the city initially designated to host these games was Santa Tecla in El Salvador. This competition was scheduled for 2021, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the games had to be postponed.
However, in June 2021 there was a series of disagreements regarding the financing of the Games between the Olympic Committee of El Salvador, the National Sports Institute of El Salvador on the one hand, and the Organizing Committee (COTECLA) and the Municipality of Santa Tecla on the other.
The Central American Sports Organization (ORDECA) met on Saturday, February 19th at the headquarters of the National Olympic Committee of Costa Rica. There, Costa Rica and Guatemala obtained unanimous agreement to jointly host the Games.
Sports Represented
Due to this change in plans, the number of sports represented went from 28 to 24, distributed as follows:
Costa Rica has the organization of 10 disciplines: baseball (at the Antonio Escarré), Sambo (at the Polideportivo de San Francisco de Dos Ríos), badminton (at the Ciudad Deportiva in Hatillo), field hockey (at the Santa Fe court in Pavas), rugby (at the Piedades Stadium in Santa Ana), judo (at Polideportivo Monserrat in Alajuela), table tennis (at the Esparza gymnasium), triathlon (in Puntarenas), surfing, and Olympic and Greco-Roman wrestling (at venues to be determined).
Guatemala will host the remaining 14 disciplines in Lake Petén and Guatemala City.
As for equestrian, swimming and athletics, they will be jointly hosted by both countries.
Under the motto of unity and brotherhood among Central American countries, athletes from Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama will finally be able to compete in their disciplines with a view to the Paris Games in 2024.
