The International Book Fair of Costa Rica was created in 1984 by the National Library of Costa Rica with the objective of promoting reading and literacy. The fair has been held for more than 30 years and has become an important event for writers, publishers and readers alike.
The main objective of the fair is to promote literacy and reading among people from all walks of life. It provides a space for everyone to come together and enjoy literature, poetry, essays, novels, comics, children’s books or any other type of written work.
The Fair this 2022
This year, the Fair will be held from August 26, 2022 to September 4, 2022. The Book Fair organization confirmed 85 exhibitors for the entire event, including state and university publishers, the Costa Rican Association of Women Writers, Editorial Espressivo, La Jirafa y Yo, the bookstores Internacional and Lehmann, the Costa Rican Literary Forum, Uruk Editores, Ojalá Ediciones and Ciudad Manga. It was also announced that, among the novelties, there will be a special area for comics and graphic novels.
In addition, more than 200 activities are scheduled, including discussions, readings, meetings with booktubers, debates and book presentations.
As part of the event, the Children’s Museum will have a 62-meter area for recreational activities, which will be called Letras Fantasticas (Fantastic Letters). This space will feature storytelling, reading workshops and school visits.

In addition, it will take place at the Convention Center, located in Belén de Heredia. Although it had been held at the Antigua Aduana de San José, this year the venue was modified to expand it and provide better conditions.

In short, the event is an opportunity for people to find new books and meet their favorite authors, while at the same time giving them the chance to participate in socio-cultural activities that promote reading as a way of life.
