Juco Wildlife Refuge: Nature and Adventure in Puriscal
The Juco Wildlife Refuge is a protected area located in Mastatal, in the canton of Puriscal, province of San José, Costa Rica. This refuge stands out for its commitment to biodiversity conservation and offers visitors an immersive experience in Costa Rican nature.
Nature and biodiversity
Covering an area of approximately 12 hectares, the refuge is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. It is an important habitat for species such as the scarlet macaw (Ara macao), howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, and various species of frogs. The predominant vegetation is tropical rainforest, characteristic of the neotropical region.
Main attractions
Among the main attractions of the refuge are several waterfalls, such as Las Gemelas, Jucó, and La Botella, which offer breathtaking scenery and opportunities for hiking and photography. The trails are well marked and allow visitors to explore the natural environment safely.
The lodge has a restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch, making it easy for visitors to spend a full day exploring the area without worrying about meals. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., every day of the week.
Tips for your visit
Visitors are advised to wear comfortable clothing, suitable footwear for walking, sunscreen, insect repellent, and drinking water. During the rainy season (May to November), caution is advised on the trails due to potentially slippery conditions.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit the Juco Wildlife Refuge is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During these months, weather conditions are more favorable for outdoor activities, and access to the waterfalls and trails is safer.
